Hand-knotted in Isfahan, Persia, this finely woven pictorial rug depicts three elegantly dressed figures gathered beneath flowering branches, surrounded by birds, blossoms, decorative vessels, and a lyrical border of paired birds and palmettes. Woven with a soft wool pile on a fine silk foundation, its ivory field is animated by deep and cornflower blues, blush, apricot, green, and red, with unusually expressive detail throughout the figures and garden scene. Dating to approximately the 1980s and preserved in mint condition, its compact 2’3″ x 3’5″ format gives it the presence of a small textile painting, equally compelling displayed on the floor or hung as a work of art.
